Our gold recommendations for much of our weight lifting equipment are frequently either Pendlay or Muscle Driver products. These guys make some of the best weight lifting gear in existence. Not only are they making the vast majority of their equipment in the USA (incredibly rare nowadays), they’ve demonstrated a commitment to high quality through their materials and warranties. You can even find the owners of these companies online at various message boards and forums talking about their product development and what goes into the construction of their gear. Olympic Weight Lifting Equipment: Free Weights or Machines?
If you’re a relatively healthy adult, we generally recommend free weights as your first purchase of weight lifting equipment. Free weights are proven to build muscle faster and develop the type of real-world strength needed to move heavy things. The reason for this is that many of the smaller stabilizing muscles don’t get worked when you’re on a machine because the machine keeps the weight balanced and in place. Free weights require your body to balance the weight as well as keep it in place for the movement you’re doing.
However, machines have their place and are especially useful for older lifters and people doing rehab work. Even if you prefer machines, weight lifting equipment like free weights can be a great option too, it is just important to know what you’re doing. Having good form and technique is important no matter what you are doing, whether a sport or lifting weights. So, always make sure to find a more experienced weight lifter to teach you, or find a good trainer that has a lot of success stories.
